Take your inspiration from the heights

Borderland Writers Co-op

Silver City, New Mexico is the heart of the Borderland Writers Co-op.

A medley of cultures enriches this small town in Southwest New Mexico. The area was the Apache homeland, a colony of Spain, a part of Mexico, a Wild West town, a headquarters for Buffalo Soldiers at nearby Fort Bayard, and has been a productive mining center for well over a hundred years. Ranchers from Grant County contribute a cowboy cultural heritage. In fact, the long-standing mining and ranching interests have shaped much of the local tone. Just look at the many pickup trucks you see on the road and observe how many people dress in jeans with or without a cowboy hat.

From the late 1990’s through now, the town has become a popular retirement destination as people from all over the US discover its wonderful weather, its proximity to the Gila Wilderness, and its artistic communities. Western New Mexico University provides cultural events and intellectual stimulation. Local art galleries, poetry at coffee shops, and hands on classes at studios offer a variety of creative endeavors. The number of writers in such a small town is larger than one might expect.

Deep Down and Dirty Writing Secrets is the first of many books to be published by the Borderland Writers Co-op. We hope to honor the mix of cultures, the occasional clashes, and the commitment to learn from one another that makes Silver City a well spring of creative self-expression.
